Finding the Right Home for Multigenerational Living: Why Location Flexibility Made All the Difference

Finding the right family home can be challenging, but when multiple generations are planning to live together, the requirements become even more specific. It is about finding a property that provides enough space, privacy and independence for everyone, while still allowing family members to remain close and support one another.

These clients came to us looking for a home that would accommodate their multigenerational family, including an elderly parent who needed her own separate living space. Their goal was to bring the family together under one roof while ensuring everyone could maintain their independence and enjoy their own space without feeling as though they were living on top of one another.

Their property brief was very specific. They were searching for a move-in-ready home with at least five bedrooms, three bathrooms and multiple living areas. Most importantly, they wanted a genuine dual-living arrangement with separate accommodation for the older generation, ideally including its own kitchen, bathroom and living space.

Location was equally important. They wanted to remain close to extended family within the Moreton Bay region while maintaining convenient access to Brisbane for work. Being close to a train station was a priority, along with access to quality schools, shopping centres and other everyday amenities. They also wanted to purchase in an established, family-friendly neighbourhood where they could comfortably settle for the long term.

Initially, their preferred locations were closer to Brisbane, allowing for a shorter commute into the city. However, as we began assessing suitable opportunities, it became clear that finding a property with genuine multigenerational living arrangements in these locations would be difficult within their budget.

Properties offering five or more bedrooms, separate living accommodation and the quality of home they were seeking were limited, particularly in the areas closest to Brisbane.

Rather than compromising on the living arrangements that were essential for their family, we worked with our clients to reassess their preferred locations and explore opportunities further north within the Moreton Bay region.

This was an important part of their buying journey. Understanding where to compromise and where to remain firm can make a significant difference to the long-term suitability of a property. For these clients, having the right living arrangements was far more important than being a little closer to Brisbane.

By expanding our search, we were able to identify an opportunity that offered considerably more than they initially thought their budget would allow.

We secured a substantial five-bedroom, three-bathroom home with three-car garage accommodation, positioned on a generous 1,000m² block within a quiet, established neighbourhood in the Moreton Bay region.

What made this property particularly suitable was its genuine dual-living configuration. The home included separate, self-contained accommodation with its own entrance, kitchen, living area, bedroom and bathroom, providing the independence and privacy the elderly family member was looking for.

The main residence offered generous living areas, a spacious kitchen and plenty of room for the rest of the family to enjoy. The layout allowed both generations to maintain their own routines and personal space while remaining close enough to support one another whenever needed.

But the property offered even more than our clients had expected.

In addition to meeting their essential living requirements, the home included a beautiful inground swimming pool, a large covered outdoor entertaining area and a fully fenced 1,000m² block.

Interestingly, a swimming pool and large block had never been essential requirements. In fact, our clients had initially been happy to consider a smaller, easy-maintenance yard if it meant securing the right home in their preferred location.

Being able to purchase a property that offered both a pool and a substantial block, while still meeting their multigenerational living requirements and remaining within budget, was an outcome they had not thought possible.

The home also offered additional practical features, including solar and battery storage, ducted air conditioning and plenty of space for vehicles and storage, all valuable considerations for a larger household.

Although the location meant a longer commute into Brisbane than originally preferred, the property still provided access to rail services and allowed our clients to remain within the Moreton Bay region, close to extended family and the amenities they needed.

Throughout the purchasing process, our focus remained on ensuring the property was suitable for the entire family, rather than simply finding a home with enough bedrooms. The separation between living areas, functionality of the secondary accommodation, overall condition of the home and long-term practicality were all important considerations.

The result was a property that delivered on their most important requirements while also providing several lifestyle features they had never expected to achieve within their budget.

Our clients are incredibly happy with their purchase and now have a home that allows multiple generations to live together comfortably while maintaining their own independence.

This purchase demonstrates that finding the right property is not always about securing a home in your first-choice suburb. Sometimes, being prepared to reconsider location can open up opportunities that provide a far better outcome for your family’s lifestyle and long-term needs.

For these clients, compromising slightly on distance from Brisbane meant they did not have to compromise on the things that mattered most. They secured a quality family home with genuine separate living accommodation, plenty of space for everyone, a swimming pool and a generous block, all within their budget.

For families considering multigenerational living, purchasing the right property involves much more than simply having enough bedrooms. It is about finding a home that provides independence, privacy and flexibility while allowing everyone to remain connected.

If you are searching for a property that can accommodate multiple generations, separate living arrangements or a granny flat, we can help you understand what is achievable within your budget, identify suitable opportunities and guide you through the purchasing process with confidence.
